With most bikes now being purchased on the internet or from large retail outlets I offer new bike setup 'out of the box'. It is an unfortunate truth that I, and many of my colleagues, frequenty see new bikes which are poorly set up, often with dangerous or damaging consequences.
.
During schools Bikeability sessions working with Wheely Fun Wheels we regularly see childrens bikes with forks fitted backwards, poor gear/brake setup, strange and sometimes dangerous cable runs, loose handlelbars, too tight or too loose components & fittings and even loose wheels! It is also common to see badly fitted bikes with saddles too low or high, handlebars not straight or with bars and gear levers not set to the most safe and comfortable reach or orientation.
Such problems are not restricted to budget/low end cycles. A recent customer was amazed to find that the gear cables on his very expensive full suspension bike (from a highly respected online specialist store) had not been installed correctly. His gears had not worked properly since he had bought the bike. He assumed he had damaged the gear mechnism or gears and asked me to look into replacing them. I replaced the cables, routed them correctly, and his bike now works properly saving him hundreds of pounds in uneccesary new components and workshop time.
